I am a visitor on this earth. As the stranger who was raised in Korea, I have been filled with desires to see my home some day. Meanwhile, I have kept asking myself why I am living on this earth. The answer I realized is to know who I am. To know about myself deeply is a very long journey. This is what art is all about for me.
I am interested in conceptual and minimal art forms which can bring a perceptible sense. Concepts that I take from my artworks range diverse themes and forms; site-specific art, re-representation, languages and painting of concerning relationship between image and canvas, and the logic of frame with space. In my view of myself I am not a verbal person, but visual. I want to show myself through my visuals, but simultaneously I am unwilling to be defined and categorized by which I deal with in my certain artworks. I manage to stand out, for my versatility. I do not like people can expect what my next exhibition would be. My approach is quite big, colorful and playful, even sometimes humorous, and this seems to be sporadic, but I just take great enjoy in making visuals reflect my thought, experience, expiration and relationship with others in convincing and entertaining ways. Creating is my big pleasure such as playing with toys and learning different languages. To me, art is about exploration and experimentation and transformation and discovery of my universe.
I do not acknowledge barriers and breaking them brings joy to me. I work in many mediums, from installation to photographs and drawings. I like mixtures and challenges they present, and finding new solutions to old questions. My sources to make something new are mostly based on individual and quotidian experience, so I need to be observant in routine.
In regard to my works of painting, I work on the interplay between image and frame, image and canvas. Oil on canvas is a typical form of painting to this day. I use the image made of this material as a very conceptual method and physical presence. At works of language, my other concern I have is the interactivity between visual technique and poetic, social statement, copy and verse in the Bible.
Now what I do matter is how to mix the sources I have got in an engaging way to look so good.
